Christmas pleasures
Apart from the odd packet of peanuts down the pub, I never eat nuts. But come Christmas there is something very satisfying in buying them in their shells, getting a really good nut cracker and getting to work.

My missus doesn't get this. "Why buy them in the shells when you can buy them without the shells" she scream as she thinks of all of the hoovering that will inevitably follow.

I've thought about this and I think it's because as a kid, at the bottom of my Christmas stocking, there would always be some walnuts and a tangerine. Or an 'easy peeler' as they're marketed now.

Okay, they were walnuts - but they were MY walnuts - and as a seven year old that gives you a certain amount of empowerment. For the first time in my life I had my own walnuts, along with the power to crack them at any time I wished - no permission needed!

Yours?

And that smell of satsumas... another Christmas ingredient.

If you take the peel and give it a good squeeze, more of the oils and aromas come out.
